“A Love Letter to Appalachia” Oil on canvas, 48 x 60 inches
Damascus, Virginia is one of my favorite places on this earth. As I lay under the canopy of trees and earth and moss invaded my senses, I gathered inspiration to create a piece specifically for this serene area of Appalachia. The ever-present flow of a stream harmonizes with the chirp of birds, wind through the trees, and the chatter of bikers on the Virginia Creeper Trail. There is energy and warmth in these moments, yet Damascus holds a deeper story.
As you travel into the woods, away from the bike trail and the stream, the chatter quiets into a stillness that cleanses the mind. The soft crunch of leaves under your feet, birdsong, and the hum of your breath is all that breaks the silence. We live our noisy, busy lives with work to do, emails to respond to, and family to take care of, and it can be so difficult to physically and mentally return to the peacefulness that the forest can bring to our souls.
I find comfort in knowing that even though I am here, working my full time job and my brain is running a mile a minute, the stream still flows in Damascus. The birds still call out to their mates, the forest floor grows plants, and fungi cycle organic matter back into the earth as a part of the grand design. When you return to your mother, she’ll be right where you left her…and she won’t be upset that you were gone so long.
“A Love Letter to Appalachia” pays homage to the comfort and warmth of the mountains welcoming you back when you return to your roots. The woods of Damascus, Virginia will always welcome me back with open arms, and so will the place you feel most aligned.
